People in bucolic Glendale refer to their burg as "Mayberry"—and its small, eclectic shop, Recycled Rose, as "the Cheers of Mayberry."
That makes owner Sue Lombardo smile. "People are walking in and out of here all the time," she says. "People with their dogs, people on walks, neighbors nearby ... What I really like are the fast friends I have made." Before opening the store, now seven years old, Ms. Lombardo worked first with Sonja Willman at Summer House and then with Mary Engelbreit, creating the displays in her stores' windows.
Recycled Rose's merchandise—a hodgepodge of old and new, funky and fine—works well as a conversation starter. The chandelier made out of glass beads ($395), the Shabby Chic dresser ($130), the glass-sided cabinet ($225), the long table with turned legs and topped with a multi-paned window ($130). At first blush, the place looks (and feels) just like a stylish great-grandmother's attic—with everything from spools of thread and old buttons to wire bird cages, lamps, lace, linens, china, clocks, concrete planters, pillows, perfume bottles, hats, statuary, silk flowers and hydrangea wreaths, jewelry and vintage clothes.
"It doesn't appeal to everyone," Ms. Lombardo says. "It takes a certain type—the type that always try to look at things and see how you can reuse them."
