My living room has vaulted ceilings, so the walls go up fairly high. I don't have a ton of money to spend, but I want to make a design statement on the wall behind the couch. What's a cost-effective way to fill up a large wall space? We took the question to Kim Taylor of Kim Taylor Design Group (314-610-7288) and this is what she suggests:
• Paint the sofa wall with an accent color, but go for bold. Take a look at Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal (HC-166) or Van Buren Brown (HC-70).
• Hang some unique architectural salvage elements on the wall. For example many St. Louis shops have old shutters, doors, window frames, chalk boards, or moldings. Grab one large piece of put a group together. They might look great with peeling paint and distressed elements or consider painting them all the same color. Maybe pop a royal blue or orange toss pillow on the sofa, and then paint all the elements on the wall that color!
• Grab a hammer, tape measure and nails after a trip to Lowe’s. Adding simple 2 by 4-foot wood boards to the wall will add architectural detail and interest. For example. create a pattern such as large rectangles, maybe boards up to the ceiling spaces 3 feet apart from each other. Have fun and make the wall your custom canvas. Paint them white, black or a vibrant accent color, such as Sherwin Williams’ Synergy (SW6838).
