"If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change." —Buddha
Flowers are as integral to the design of a space as the perfect chair. They add color, life, and the ideal finishing touch.
They are absolutely my guilty pleasure, but the truth is they do not have to be expensive. The price of a flower does not make a more beautiful arrangement and even very inexpensive flowers from the market, such as the long lasting alstromeria or mum, can be combined with a unique container to create a gorgeous splash of color, texture, and life to your home. Here are nine tips on creating impact with flowers from your local market:
What you need:
Flowers from your local market or garden
Unique containers
Floral foam
Cellophane Floral tape
Floral frogs
Floral Scissors
Floral clay
Rubber band
Tip 1: Use bowls, teacups, umbrella stands, and all varieties of unique and unconventional vessels found in your home to showcase your arrangements. Picking your vase is part of the fun!
Tip 2: To support stems in low containers, a frog is essential. Floral clay keeps stems from shifting and scratching.
Tip 3: A grid of cellophane across the mouth of a bowl or container supports top-heavy flowers better than a frog would. Cut flowers short and insert a few in each opening.
Tip 4: Preserve fresh flowers and enhance their beauty by adding any of these ingredients: crushed aspirin, 1/4 teaspoon of bleach, sugar, a copper penny, or floral food. Change water frequently.
Tip 5: Use gatherings of a single type or color of flower for impact.
Tip 6: Add more drama to a simple glass container and hide stems by putting a hosta leaf from your garden at the base of your arrangement.
Tip 7: Bind stems with a rubber band to keep their form before putting them in their container.
Tip 8: For large containers, fill bottom with sand or bubble wrap and place a smaller container on top. This reduces the amount of flowers, or, in this case, soil, but still has the impact of the container.
Tip 9: Single blooms in multiple vases look gorgeous too! Line a ledge, shelf, or center of a table with supermarket roses, daisies, zinnias, or leaves from the garden.
Have fun! We did!!!
