We’ve been seeing a lot of gallery walls cropping up in fabulous houses and on Pinterest pages and while we love the trend, the prospect seems daunting. How do you arrange the photos? How much distance do you put between? How exactly do you do it?
We turned to Emma Hand and Anne Sommers, the owners of IndieMats, an ingenious system where patterned mats become the frames, for advice. Anne returned with very specific instructions: To make the arranging easier, first lay the frames out on a table or floor. Start with a big one in the middle and work out from there. Maintain a consistent amount of space between all the frames (one finger’s width, two fingers’ width, you decide). Once you find a pleasing arrangement, Anne suggests you snap a shot with your cell phone. Then try a different arrangement. Pick the best. Go back to the largest frame in the middle and start hanging.
The coolest trick here is IndieMats have adhesive hangers so no hammer, no nails, and no holes in the wall are required. So you can see what it looks like, Anne also sent us a sample wall using IndieMats. To make the look your own, she also sent along these handy graphs.
