Q: I recently received my grandmother's dining room set, which I truly cherish. Here's my dilemma; I'd like to give the set a fresh face so-to-speak without compromising the classic look and style. Can you suggest a fabric for reupholstering the chairs? Something in sync with the walls and drapes? Perhaps a patterned cream fabric? And what about adding coral to warm it up?—TCS, Chesterfield.
A. We turned to Emily Klassen, designer and project manager at Savvy Surroundings (9753 Clayton, 314-432-7289, savvysurroundingsdesign.com). Once she had the paint color in hand (Benjamin Moore White Rain), her response: “CF mentioned she wanted a cream texture on the chair seats, but I would also propose this stripe that includes all the colors as an option as well. The other three cream fabrics are: a vinyl / faux leather that looks like pearlized crumpled silk, a textured cream fabric with a slightly shimmery background, and a cut and loop pile woven fabric. I know she had talked about coral, but I found a lot more raspberry and not many good coral options for fabrics and accessories. I also think the raspberry would be more timeless in terms of color trends. To pull the raspberry in, I would incorporate some artwork that included both the blue in the walls and the raspberry colors.”
