To create an instant room, you need functional pieces: places to sit, a table to put a drink on, art for interest, draperies for privacy. Here, designer Ken Stückenschneider (314-726-2000, stuckenschneider.com) taps into two of the city’s greatest passions: baseball and the Gateway Arch. He designed the baseball rug and worked pinstripes into the curtains that frame a view of the monument.
“It’s a neutral background with a variety of patterns that reference both the rug and the curves of the Saarinen Arch,” Stückenschneider says. He tapped local vendors: The sofa and coffee table are from Centro Modern Furnishings (4727 McPherson, 314-454-0111, centro-inc.com). The drapery fabric was designed by Trenna Travis for Michael Miller Fabrics (michaelmillerfabrics.com). The photo of Kate Moss is from Gallery 618 (7513 Forsyth, 314-862-2500, gallery618.com), and the Alvar Aalto armchairs are available at David Deatherage Design (314-495-3719, daviddeatheragedesign.com).
“It is supposed to be comfortable—and happy,” Stückenschneider says. “And it can be done in five easy pieces from local sources.”
