Father’s Day is quickly approaching, and that means it’s time for BBQ tools, right? Maybe in your house, but not at mine. My husband doesn’t cook, so tongs and a meat thermometer are not going to wow him. Instead, I’m going a different direction.
One easy idea is an assortment of craft beers. Whether you pick up a growler or two at Schlafly’s, some 750ml bottles at Perennial, or an assortment at your local grocery store, the beer enthusiast will love this gift. For those who want to spend a bit more, try a beer of the month club. Packages range from a one-month to 12-month subscription.
Another clever idea—the Zoku Slush and Shake Maker priced at about $20 at Williams-Sonoma. This neat little 8-ounce cup comes in four different bright colors and allows you to make two 8-ounce fruit smoothies, iced coffee, or even a frozen margarita in just seven minutes. You simply keep the inner core in the freezer, pour your liquid in, and stir with the enclosed spoon. With a little practice, even my culinary challenged husband could make himself a breakfast smoothie in minutes. (Incidentally, my kids really wanted one for themselves when I showed it to them—another gift idea.)
As a side note, I thought a series of bartending classes might be kind of a fun gift. Unfortunately, no one seems to have come up with any for the amateur or casual bartender. If that’s his speed, you’re looking at around $500–$600 for a 40-hour professional course. They do offer evening classes if you decide to pursue that idea. I’m forgoing that one.
If sweets are more of his thing, you might also consider a cookie basket from Cookies By Design. They come in themes from sports enthusiast to golf player to beer drinker. There’s even one for a Dad who likes to grill. But in that case, I’d go with the digital meat thermometer.
