Do you love to follow color and design trends but are afraid to commit to painting the entire room or spending a lot on designer products? I recently shared this bold and budget-friendly way to bring some savvy style into your home by painting this cheerful chevron pattern yourself!
Here's what you need:
• Plain white fabric
• A pillow form (You can also use a plain fabric covered pillow instead of sewing)
• Acrylic paint (or fabric paint) of the color you want to use
• Foam brush
• Painters tape
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Sewing Machine
• Staple Gun
• Chair
1. Assemble your supplies. I had supplies on hand, including fabric and pillows, so this project was essentially free! However, even if you are purchasing supplies, this is a simple, minimal-cost DIY project.
2. The next part of the process is to measure out your fabric and cut to desired size. Begin taping out a zig zag pattern with your painter's tape. If you prefer precision, measure it out using your ruler, or just eyeball it and don't sweat the variances. This is fun so don't get too hung up on perfection, however do make sure your tape is firmly on the fabric so it doesn't bleed under the tape. Begin painting using your foam brush until the fabric is saturated.
3. Once fabric is covered, allow to dry and peel back tape to reveal your pattern.
4. Congrats! In less than an hour you just created your own fabric!
The next steps vary based on what you chose as your finished project. If you are sewing your own pillow, use your fabric as the front. An envelope back makes it easy to slip on and off the pillow form. Add piping if you prefer a more tailored look. If you purchased a plain pillow already sewn, toss it on a chair and you're done! For those who are using your fabric to cover a chair seat, simply stretch and staple it to the underside of seat cushion and you have transformed it with an updated and graphic look.
So now that you have the basic technique, get creative! Use on rugs, furniture, floors, and more!
