It was location that drew the first residents to what is now Richmond Heights. In the late 1800s, a few wealthy St. Louisans built homes on the high ground just outside the city limits, drawn by the countryside’s then picturesque, quiet atmosphere just a short commute away from the bustle of city life. Today, 115 years later, the municipality’s central location is still hard to beat—Richmond Heights borders Ladue, Clayton, Brentwood, Maplewood and the City of St. Louis; the area’s mature trees, varied housing stock and amenities such as the Galleria and The Heights community center only adds to its appeal.
A proposed merger with neighboring Clayton has garnered both applause and admonition from residents, with much of the hoopla centered on combining the Maplewood-Richmond Heights and Clayton school districts. But the cities have only committed to a two-year study of the idea thus far, and, contrary to popular belief, the school districts would not be combined nor their boundaries altered as part of a merger.
