Dr. Sandra Mims, THE art teacher at Oakville Elementary School, showed off the entries in this year's contest with pride. The students were assigned to create gingerbread villages created out of edible or recycled products. The traditional house when Hansel and Gretel would wander never looked this good. The students created everything from a castle (out of miniature marshmallows) to an igloo (out of sugar cubes) to a chicken coop (with chocolate chickens roosting inside). Then there were the traditional gingerbread domiciles, delightful to both the eye and (we suspect) the stomach. One of the most arresting entries of all was the one built to replicate New York's Guggenheim museum. In South County, gingerbread houses have soared to a whole new level.
