Maybe it's because of Mad Men. Maybe it's embracing a futuristic, 21st-century mindset. Either way, designers and decorators are looking to the past for designs that will withstand the test of time. Mid-century modern furniture's minimalistic, light and bright tones make it easy to incorporate into your décor, whether you're looking for one stand-out piece or a house full of suave '60s style. Although many furniture brands are making new pieces that embody mid-century modern design, here's five local stores where you can get the real thing.
2617 Cherokee, 618-924-3775
This newly opened store on Cherokee feature high-end vintage and handmade home decor curated by husband-and-wife team Brian and Julia Leenig. After running a successful online shop, the couple opened their brick-and-mortar location in early December. The store's aesthetic is decidedly mid-century, along with notes of Danish, rustic, and industrial decor.
3189 S. Grand, 314-875-0705
Like Future Ancestor, Rocket Century began as an online shop with owner Kristina Starr's collection of vintage items. Open since 2012, the store features midcentury and Danish modern furniture, Art Deco–style pieces, and art, including works from local artists. A Cherokee Street mainstay, TFA (The Future Antiques) is chock-full of fun and functional mid-century modern décor and accessories. Vintage fashion and accessories sit among pieces such as a honey-hued leather and wood recliner, mosaic tile tables, and a G. Tibergaard Nielsen drop-leaf teak desk.
