Ice sculptures are a mainstay on Delmar during the annual Loop Ice Carnival.
NOTE: Many events are being cancelled or rescheduled due to this weekend's inclement weather. We suggest checking event websites or calling organizers, especially for events scheduled for Friday, January 13.
The Art of Live Festival | January 12–15
Now in its third year, Art of Live aims to expose St. Louis audiences to the best national and local bands—some they've heard of, others brand-new. This year, the festival happens in three of St. Louis' best venues—Off Broadway, Old Rock House, and The Ready Room. The lineup includes Tortoise, Bug Chaser, JEFF The Brotherhood, The Sleepy Rubies, Overcoats, Caveofswords, MVSTERMIND, Anthony Lucius, G. Love and Special Sauce...and that's just a small sampling. (Here's more on the festival from Melissa Meinzer.) See website for times, venues, and prices.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Celebration | January 13
Washington University professor Dr. Rebecca Wanzo, co-director of the Center for Humanities, lectures on “Reframing Black Citizenship: Civil Rights Images and Frozen Ideals.” Using photographs and other visual ephemera from the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Wanzo will discuss how imagery was strategically used by activists and others to help African-Americans gain full citizenship rights in the U.S., including the right to vote. Free, but tickets are required and available through MetroTix or by calling 314-534-1111. 7 p.m. Farrell Auditorium, Saint Louis Art Museum, 1 Fine Arts, slam.org.
Loop Ice Carnival | January 13 & 14
The festivities start Friday night with the Snow Ball at the Moonrise Hotel. Then, on Saturday, all of the delightful cold-weather zaniness that we've come to expect happens up and down Delmar: ice slides, 5K and 10K Frozen Buns Runs, ice sculptures, a temporary tattoo scavenger hunt, human dog sled races, frozen turkey bowling, a putt putt pub crawl, and more. (The National Weather Service is predicting the 60-degree temperatures will pass by Thursday, and the carnival will be covered in seasonally and thematically appropriate snow showers.) New this year: a Ferris Wheel and fire performers. Charlene Oldham writes more about this year's festivities here. $5 or two non-perishable items admission to the Snow Ball. 8 p.m.–midnight. Check website for prices, times and locations for individual carnival events on Saturday. Delmar Loop, visittheloop.com.
MLK Family Celebration | January 14 & 16
On Saturday and Monday, the Missouri History Museum celebrates Martin Luther King's vision and legacy with events scheduled throughout its building, including a Movement Workshop with songs, stories, and a Freedom Walk; a "We Stores" info table with resources and reading lists to help families discuss race and racism; arts and crafts workshops; a musical performance by Dre Hilton; and youth activism and engagement workshops. The first 150 kids arriving at the museum receive an MLK storybook. Free. 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Missouri History Museum, 5700 Lindell, mohistory.org.
Cardinals Care Winter Warmup | January 14–16
UPDATE: Saturday's event has been cancelled due to inclement weather. Spring training is still a few months off, but this weekend, you can get your baseball fix in the off-season and support a good cause, too. Fans can play interactive games; get their photo taken with Fredbird; browse collectibles and memorabilia; attend Q&A sessions with players, owners, scouts, and broadcasters; meet baseball Hall of Famers; bid on rare memorabilia; and get Cardinals players' autographs. $10–$40. 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Sat & Sun, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Mon. Hyatt Regency St. Louis At The Arch, 315 Chestnut, stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com.
