For its 105th season this summer, The Muny will bring tales of forbidden romance, man-eating plants, and sisterhood to St. Louis theater-goers. According to Mike Isaacson, artistic director and executive producer of The Muny, the season’s shows aim to offer something for everyone.
“[I hope that] it’s a great adventure,” Isaacson said in a release announcing the season’s selections. “It’s like a great meal—you have an appetizer, you have a main course, you have a dessert. You walk away from the seven shows and it’s just full, and rich, and human, and beautiful.”
The season opens on June 12 and continues through the end of August. The full lineup will include the following:
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
June 12-18
Prime your appetite with the season’s first course, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, which takes viewers through the epic story of the singer-songwriter’s rise to fame. This jukebox musical features over two dozen of King’s greatest hits, including “It’s Too Late,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and “I Feel the Earth Move.”
June 22-30
Bring the whole family along for this classic story adapted to the stage. Belle, Mrs. Potts, Lumière, and the rest of the crew will embark on a quest for true love before time runs out—with “a dose of Muny magic,” of course. The show promises to serve a feast for the eyes.
July 5-11
Chess will hit The Muny stage for the first time this summer in partnership with the St. Louis Chess Club and World Chess Hall of Fame. The Cold-War era story— developed by pop group ABBA and lyricist Tim Rice—explores a dramatic faceoff between two grandmasters, one American and one Soviet.
July 15-21
This Romeo and Juliet-inspired musical, which recently found its way into the headlines through Steven Speilberg’s 2021 movie adaptation, follows star-crossed lovers Maria and Tony. As their romance buds, tensions between rival street gangs threaten to pull them apart.
July 25-31
Something horrifying is growing in this grisly-but-whimsical comedy: namely, a flesh-eating plant called Audrey II. Hum along to evergreen tunes including “Skid Row (Downtown),” “Somewhere That’s Green,” and “Suddenly, Seymour.”
August 4-10
Jonathan Larson’s rock musical is a testament to the queer community living in Lower Manhattan’s East Village at the height of the AIDS epidemic. The critically acclaimed show features a cast of struggling artists as they face tragedy and find joy together.
August 14-20
Based on the hit film starring Whoopi Goldberg, this comedic musical follows aspiring performer Deloris Van Cartier as she’s unceremoniously placed in the witness protection program and sent to a convent. According to The Muny’s release, this disco-inspired romp “promises to be divine!”
