Q: I’m looking for a functional, stylish tote—something perfect for the beach.
A: As the heat rolls in, the eternal fashion question is how to lighten up handbags, both literally and figuratively. For the past several years, my go-to bags have included a combination of practical, chic, and fun. My standby is a well-worn white Goyard; the treated canvas is easily wiped down, so it often travels with me to the beach. I also have a selection of beach bags and totes from around the world: mesh market bags from Brazil, beaded straw bags from Bali, mirrored bags from Morocco.
This year, though, it’s time to mix it up. My fantasy bag is a laser-cut white Vienna tote from Azzedine Alaïa. Givenchy’s Antigona totes (available at Saks Fifth Avenue) are terrifically versatile, with rubberized leather that can withstand the rigors of the beach. Other options include Lusso’s Be You woven bags from Madagascar, 6 Shore Road and Mara Hoffman beach bags at Splash, colorful options in woven jute from The Woman’s Exchange, and baby-blue Bottega Venetawoven-leather totes at Neiman Marcus.
For more structure and a little less beach, there are options aplenty. Kate Spade offers the Carrigan tote, with scalloped edges. The new Phillip Lim line at Saks has some lovely options. “My preferred summer bag is the cross-body bag, which lightens my load by keeping my hands free,” says Byrd owner Emily Elbert. “I love the one we just got in from Marni in electric blue.”
With so many options this season, you should have no problem finding something that suits both your style and warm-weather needs.
