Swarovski, the Austrian crystal company famous for more than a century for its cut crystal glass used in jewelry, couture, home decor, glass sculptures and breathtaking chandeliers, is bringing its glittering glamour to St. Louis this weekend.
In a trunk show featuring designs from both the Atelier Swarovski couture collection—collaborations with fashion designers from around the world—and pieces from the Atelier Core collection, it promises to make fashion and jewelry lovers swoon.
The event kicks off Friday, May 6, at Lusso (165 Carondelet Plaza, 314-725-7205) with a cocktail reception from 5-8 p.m. and light bites provided by 801 Chophouse and 801 Fish.
The trunk show, which will continue all day Saturday, will feature pieces from a collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier, whose sensual and glamorous twelve-piece collection features burnished metals and a colored crystal called the “Kaputt.”
“Jean Paul Gaultier’s creativity, theatricality and originality has pushed the innovation of our crystal into ever more exciting new forms,” says Nadja Swarovski, executive member of the board.
Swarovski has been long famous for beading and embellishing some of the most famous couturiers in the world, and has a history of collaborating with many of the world's leading fashion designers and tastemakers, including designers Maison Martin Margiela, Christopher Kane, Iris Apfel and Philip Tracy.
From the collection by designers Fredrickson Stallard comes a more architectural collection, contemporary in its geometric feel and featuring caged necklaces, cuffs and earrings, and translucent crystals. From Viktor & Rolf expect rich black velvets incorporating crystal studs. The Atelier Core collection is a more versatile line perfect for boosting wardrobes with everyday pieces.
“Our evolving Core Collection constantly explores different interpretations of the use of crystal whilst maintaining a sense of continuity from season to season,” says Swarovski.
Last week, I got a sneak peek at both collections, and these pieces are incredible works of art, straddling the worlds of fashion and art. While some are more architectural and modern, others play with light and shimmer in a more feminine way. Still, all are dripping with chic. And all are unique.
“Atelier Swarovski appeals to me because of the constant collaboration with interesting designers and their ability to push the limits and blur the edges of jewelry design,” says Drea Ranek, co-owner of Lusso. “This is not your mother's crystal!”
