The capacity crowd at Thursday’s P!nk concert in St. Louis came away using words such as “blown away,” “awesome,” “inspirational,” and “beautiful.” The eighth stop into her Beautiful Trauma World Tour, the concert at Scottrade was something to behold and while it already moved like a well-oiled big-production machine, there were also touches of intimacy and realism.
To start the night, a silver-clad, shimmering P!nk hung from an oversized chandelier high above the stage. This set the tone for a night full of aerial acrobatics and left more than one attendee wondering if she wasn’t a real superhero—and not just because of her feats high off the ground.
The three-time Grammy Awards winner kicked off the energetic night with her first single “Get the Party Started,” off her 2001 Missundaztood album. And it definitely got the audience off their feet and in the party mood for the rest of the night. For the next 110 or so minutes the crowd never stopped moving.
She then went into the title track of her newest album, “Beautiful Trauma,” and then slipping back into more familiar territory with “Just Like a Pill” and “Who Knew.”
P!nk kept the crowd going with “Revenge,” introducing it with a short video on the mega screen and involved more aerobatics.
The night continued with hit after hit, costume changes, set changes from all pink to a mystical magical forest land to dancers clad in all pink to those fitting into that mystical land and more; including more aerobatics.
Throughout the night, she connected with the crowd on a personal level, waving, smiling, shaking hands, and crouching down to shake hands with people or even to have a brief conversation. At one one point, an audience member asked if she'll sing at her wedding—and P!nk replied, "I'll sing right now," she said, and proceeded to ask her a little bit about her wedding.
At one point, P!nk took a much-deserved breath during a video narrated by her that spoke to what makes P!nk, P!nk. And that, along with the aerobatics, is what truly elevated her to superhero level. “I need to know my pain is helping you,” she said during the video. She went on to say “we’re all pink inside,” that everyone is the same inside and how she’s “not afraid to be a strong woman.” She continued the theme of wishing that everyone could be better to each other “to see people feel less than, hurts my heart.” She uses her pen to write words to lift others.
“What About Us” described as a politically-inspired song about a “wounded America” aptly followed the video.
She then drew the crowd in, bringing a more stripped down version to the catwalk and shutting down lights to give the feel of a more intimate setting for her next few songs that included “For Now” and “I Am Here.” And then immediately turned it around to the full-blown production. Throughout the concert, it was clear P!nk and the rest of her crew were having a good time—it wasn’t a cut-and-dry, staid production. It was full of life and energy and fun.
As one to connect with her audience, P!nk didn’t let the stadium size get in her way. During the encore “So What,” she took to the air once again, and flew above everyone to get close to the fans in the back. She ended the night with the ballad “Glitter in the Air,” as she was truly glittering in the air most of the night.
