With LouFest right around the corner, it’s time to break out those hair styles and accessories you wouldn’t typically wear to the office. While flower crowns and extreme ombré are still popular festival looks, a lesser-known trend is just as striking: hair tapestry.
The trend started at Bleach, a salon in London known for its progressive, trendsetting hairstyles. Setting up teepees at trendy events around town, the salon offered a new kind of hair accessory that since has spread to the United States.
So what exactly is hair tapestry? Think of your hair as an empty loom, waiting to be weaved with beautifully bright colors. Follow these five steps, and you’ll fit right in at the next big music festival.
Step 1: Place a tapestry loom around the section of hair that you’ve chosen to weave.
Step 2: Separate the strands of hair to create a “warp”—the lines of thread that run parallel to the length.
Step 3: Use a flat, blunt needle with the embroidery thread of your choice, and weave it through the hair as the “weft” (or lines parallel to the width), creating the width of tapestry you like. Then, weave it backward and forward to the desired length.
Step 4: You can change out the thread colors as you go, but just use one color thread to save time and simplify the process.
Step 5: Weave the final thread through the back of your hair tapestry.
You can also embellish the tapestry and add designs. But until you practice, keep it simple. Leave the rest of your hair textured and flowing for that perfect, bohemian vibe.
