The People's Joy Parade on Cherokee Street
1. Cinco de Mayo on Cherokee Street: For authenticity, tradition, and, well, joy, you really can’t beat the goings-on along Cherokee Street. On Saturday, three stages will fill the city’s Latin quarter with music, including Javier Mendoza, Tef Poe, Syna So Pro, and So Many Dynamos, among plenty others. Eat and drink yourself as silly as you please. Art will be happening before your eyes, as well as Lucha Libre wrestling and mechanical bull rides. The People’s Joy Parade’s struts through the neighborhood, from Minnesota and Cherokee, starting at 1:11 p.m. (For more on the festivities, check out this article.)
2. Hacienda: Spend Thursday on Hacienda’s groovy patio starting at 11 a.m. A DJ alternates with live music, and the full menu is available all day. Plus, if the restaurant runs out of parking, the nearby Hudson School lots are available after 3:30 p.m., with a $10 donation helping the school’s PTA. The party continues Friday with a tasting of Herradura Tequila and Saturday with Port Royal beer from Honduras. 9748 Manchester.
3. Diablitos: If you find yourself somehow not at work Thursday, there are plenty of ways to spend the day. Diablitos gets the party underway at 11 a.m., with dollar tacos, specials on burritos and quesadillas, and margaritas as far as the eye can see. A live DJ provides the backdrop to all sorts of shenanigans, including the Chicken Drop (think excretory bingo). 3761 Laclede.
4. Rosalita’s Cantina: Party on Washington Avenue Thursday from 10 a.m. to midnight. The Tex-Mex institution takes over the whole street. And while libations are a key part of the fiesta, it’s for the whole family, with music and a mechanical bull waiting to test your mettle. 1235 Washington.
5. Wave Taco: You don’t even have to leave downtown for beachy good vibes, if your idea of celebrating is a little more on the competitive side. Wave Taco is holding a coed intermediate tournament during its Cinco De Mayo Beer Bash on Saturday at its sand volleyball bar. For $180, your team of six ($30 for each extra player) gets draft beer and well drinks from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as a taco lunch and games. If you’d rather cheer than spike, a $25 wristband gets you in (with drinks and tacos, of course). 1335 Convention Plaza.
