Popular country music is fun -- when I am at themed restaurants. But noted musicians Keith Urban and his tour buddies Sugarland recieve my applause -- not for their music, but because rather than playing the county's Verizon Wireless Ampitheater, they're going to venture into the depths of the city for a performance.Yes, Urban is favoring the urban.
Hopefully his motivation wasn't just to hide form the summer heat and mosquitoes, or the foul smells of Earth City. I'm going to pretend he is doing it for the good of downtown St. Louis. Spring and Summer are Verizon’s main season, and it tends to snatch up a good number of the big, A-list performers. (For instance in July, No Doubt has chosen to perform there instead of a venue a little closer to the city, like The Pageant.)
Yes, the downtown area bustles during the business week, but events pull in much needed revenue and liveliness for the city in the evenings and on weekends. Urban’s show will bring people from the outer limits into the city.. Maybe, hopefully, that trip will inspire them to start falling in love again with the, er, urban core?
Thank you, Keith Urban. Your music may not get me grooving, but your concert venue sure does. --Alice Telios, summer intern
