It appears the most basic of trends has become indispensable for spring—color—and we couldn’t be happier! After the trying winter our area has seen, what could be more uplifting than a serious burst of bright pink, electric blue, or sunshine yellow? It almost seems as if the designers had the Midwest in mind when picking their pallets.
On the runway, shades were mixed-and-matched, and worn together with equally bright, or contrasting hues. Garnering much attention is Prabal Gurung, whose spring 2011 collection epitomizes the optimistic outlook of spring’s most coveted hues. The inspired ensembles are surely indicative of the designer’s extensive travels, particularly to destinations known for their colorful textiles, such as India—where Prabal first studied fashion.
Another colorful stand-out brand is Jil Sander. The breezy, yet perfectly-chic spring 2011 collection stuns with a multitude of daywear options perfectly suitable for lounging poolside or a shopping trip with the girls. Please be advised, however, that these selections are not for the timid, as the near-neon hues are sure to elicit much envy from fellow fashionistas.
So how do these runway trends translate into real life? The trick is to pair them with classic closet staples such as trousers, shorts, or blazers in a neutral color palette. White works especially well with bright colors and really brings out the “wow-factor” without going overboard.
The easiest and perhaps safest way to add color is by choosing a punchy accessory. We found a few that are totally crave-worthy from local boutiques. We love this teal pouch by Virginia Johnson available at Mezzanine in Maplewood, and this Tory Burch mini-bag from Wish in St. Louis is to die for in lava red. Both are currently available in store—in limited supply of course.
