You could say that reptilian prints “slithered” their way onto runways for spring and summer 2014 runway shows.
Designer Roberto Cavalli, noted for his ubiquitous use of animal prints over the years, yet again married glamour with snakeskin in his boho, 20’s-inspired spring 2014 collection. Exotic details were also incorporated into spring 2014 resort footwear shows, with standout snakeskin pieces such as Rebecca Minkoff’s ankle-cuff sandal and Gucci’s block heels. Lanvin and Reed Krakoff created classic separates in their 2014 spring resort shows that could be mixed with more casual companions like a sweatshirt or bomber jacket. Print master Diane Von Furstenberg also chose to adorn her models with head to toe python ensembles including pantsuits and separates; even her iconic wrap dresses were not immune from this print!
It’s widely known in the fashion world that animal prints such as leopard and cheetah function as neutrals, with snakeskin, python, and crocodile being no exception to the rule. Whatever texture du jour, this luxurious aesthetic radiates a certain level of sophistication and edginess.
If you’re leery about sampling this trend, start with a minimalist approach: stick with accessories or small pieces and use the print as an accent. An oversized envelope clutch, sling-back pumps, or silk blazer look effortless as opposed to contrived, and won’t saturate your look.
