One of my favorite galleries around is the wee MAPS Contemporary Art Space over in Belleville. Young B.j. Vogt (who runs the gallery with the even younger Chris Vogt—his little brother) never fails to book surprising and wonderful shows. Tonight’s exhibit, opening at 6 p.m. and closing at 9 p.m., is SKATEABLE, curated by Ben Goeke (who totally skates). The show includes paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, illustrations, videos and “skateable objects,” by Ben and a cadre of fellow artists and skateboarders. If you don’t want to drive in the rain you can, like some of the artists are planning to do, take the Metro. (Here’s B.j.’s hand-dandy route map, for your downloading pleasure.) Then you can skate—or take the No. 16 Belleville St. Clair Square bus—to the gallery, located at 225 N. Illinois. If you drive, take I-64 East to Hwy 159 South (exit 12) to Belleville; the gallery is about six miles down on the right side of N. Illinois. If you hit the fountain and the circular drive, you’ve gone too far.
And I must post the email flyer here, because these dynamic dudes make me so freaking happy, especially on a rainy day like today; plus, you'll note there's more info to be gleaned from it:
If you don’t make it out tonight, note that gallery hours for Maps Contemporary Art Space are Saturdays and Sundays from noon–5 p.m., or you can call 618-334-4347 or send a note to maps_contemporary_art_space@yahoo.com to schedule an appointment.
