A late blog post today, after a frantic morning zipping around on interviews, garden scouts, and returning research materials to the library. Interesting stuff going on this weekend:
1. Colin Michael Shaw at Avante Art Gallery in Maplewood
Colin Michael Shaw, a multimedia aritist and one of this blog's most frequent commentors, has an exhibition of assorted mixed works opening tonight at Avante Gallery in Maplewood; he describes his work as engaging with "color and design, materials and methods, exploration and experimentation." The reception's sponsored by Schlafly (not too shabby!) and To see some of Colin's work, check out his site.

2. Becoming Emily at the Black Cat Theater
Tonight and tomorrow night are your last chances to catch multimedia theater piece, Becoming Emily, based on the experiences of nurse Emily Lyons, who survived a bombing of an Alabama abortion clinic in 1998. Conceived and directed by That Uppity Theatre Co. artistic director Joan Lipkin, the play is uncannily timely in light of Dr. George Tiller's recent murder. You can read Lipkin's first-person essay here, where she describes the process of taking the play from concept to finished theater piece.

3. Book release for Counting Chickens: Tales of Raising 8 Kids (and 4 Hens) in the City of St. Louis
Jeff Fister, editor for Virginia Publishing and the West End Word, lives in a 112-year-old house in the Central West End, with his large family and a whole passel of chickens. His memoir chronicles hs experience of raising lots of kidsand backyard poulty at the same time. And if you get very inspired after reading Fister's book, note there is a whole website, backyardchickens.com, devoted to the subject. Being something of a country girl, though, I prefer the brass tacks approach of good ol' Murray McMurray.
