There's more coming on this topic; I trailed the folks from the Artists' Guild in DC as they petitioned to have this exhibit come to St. Louis, and have a bunch of interesting photos and anecdotes to post, but that'll be later this week. For now, here's the basic info so you can mark your calender for this exhibit, which I can tell you is well worth checking out:
The St. Louis Artists' Guild, in cooperation with Mrs. Maya Soetoro Ng, the Embassy of Indonesia in Washington DC and the Indonesian Consulate General in Chicago are proud to present the Exhibition of the Collection of Indonesian Batiks of the late Dr. Ann Dunham, President Barack Obama's mother. In addition to this collection, there will also be an exhibit of the private collection of batiks of Mrs. Ani Yudhoyono, the First Lady of Indonesia.
This exhibition has only been shown in seven other major cities throughout the continental USA, including: Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, New York City, Albany, and Washington D.C. Thanks to the efforts of the St. Louis Artists' Guild, the final exhibition in the United States for 2009 will be in St. Louis, MO.
Dr. Ann Dunham had an early interest in the textile arts as a weaver. She created wall hangings which represented the common people of Indonesia, which included earthy shades of brown and green. She married Lolo Soetoro and moved to Indonesia in the 1960s with her son Barack Obama. With the permission of Maya Soetoro-Ng, sister of President Obama and the collection's owner, and in conjunction with the Indonesian Embassy; the St. Louis Artists' Guild is proud to exhibit the fabulous Batik collection of Dr. Ann Dunham.
Exhibit open to the public-FREE entry · Oct. 2, 2009 - noon - 4pm · Oct. 3, 2009 - 10am - 4pm · Oct. 4, 2009 - noon - 4pm
