My first issue of CRAFT landed in my mailbox last week (OK, yes, I am admitting to a certain level of geekitude here, and I don't really care). I left it there without looking at the mailing label, because I share a mailbox with an artist neighbor, and any magazine, envelope or flyer with the word "art" on it I automatically assume is hers. She apologetically left it on the doorstep after opening the plastic (even though it was my error to leave it in the mailbox with the rest of her mail!) and it still took me till this weekend to crack it open and peruse the contents.
I was totally delighted to see that the first feature was dedicated to local fiber artist, Michael Aaron McCallister, who I profiled a couple of years ago. He does portraits in embroidery, and though he has an art degree in ceramics, is essentially self-taught with all of the fiber stuff. He has an ambitious schedule laid out, years in advance, for all of the people he is going to render in embroiderly floss. The work that goes into each piece includes reading multiple biographies on his subject before even picking up a needle.
I don't believe the article is online, so unfortunately I can't link to it - you'll have to either order a back issue or chase down a copy at your local bookstore. Mostly I just wanted to send a shout-out of congrats to Aaron, and note that the national press has taken note of a talented local artist. —Stefene Russell
