The Peabody Opera House has been open for one year, as of October 1. Fiona Apple, Peter Frampton and Roger Daltrey have all played there. Kathleen Madigan appears later this month, on October 13 (read Daniel Durcholz's Q&A with Madigan, which also appears in our October issue, here).
One year later, it's almost impossible to remember just how hopeless it seemed that the building would ever get renovated and re-opened. But it happened. And there was a red-carpet gala with Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, and Jay Leno that was in keeping with the momentous nature of the occasion. Last September, we ran Jay Tweedy of Wilco on the cover, because Wilco played one of the first concerts there; you can read Jarrett Medlin's interview with Tweedy here. We also recommend Jason Best's amazing feature on the process of getting the doors back open. Yes, it really was that hard. So quickly we forget!
