So you've been to The Stable, you've been to all the antique stores and galleries, you've been to SBAC ... but have you been to the Chatillon-DeMenil House? If not, you should plan to pay a visit to this marvelous, overlooked gem in the Cherokee-Lemp district. This month, there are two cool events scheduled, both perfect opportunities to check out this neat historical site:
"September is Architecture Month at the Chatillon-DeMenil House! The first, this Saturday afternoon, is going to be a lot of fun -- great for budding artists, teens, and folks who want to sharpen their architectural observation skills.
Saturday, September 19: Sketch Workshop with Emily Hemeyer
1 -3 p.m
Come draw architecture with us! You don’t have to be an artist to create an individualistic work of art. We’ll focus on looking at details as well as the whole, and creatively expressing your observations on paper. All ages welcome! Materials will be provided (or feel free to bring your own favorites).
Saturday, September 27: Greek Revival Architecture and the DeMenil House
Illustrated talk by Esley Hamilton
2 p.m.
Greek Revival became a national style that captured the political idealism of a young nation. Find out how the Chatillon-DeMenil House does (and doesn’t) reflect the dominant architectural classicism of the mid-19th century."
And in November, they're staging the perfect Gothic All Soul's Day event with A Death in the Family, a reenactment of a Victorian funeral, complete with folks from Paranormal Research & Investigative Studies Midwest, who will show footage from their ghost-hunting trips. Sounds like the perfect sobering event to help you recover from that Halloween party hangover! The Chatillon-DeMenil House is located at 3352 DeMenil Place; contact 'em at 314-771-5828 for more info. --Stefene Russell
