Ace Scrap Metal Vice President Melissa Bushman says it’s not really so weird to discover beauty in a vat of cast-off aluminum turnings.
“I’ve got some [artistic] photos of scrap hanging up, matted and framed in my office,” she said.
If you’ve got an eye for decay and/or industrial subjects, a junkyard is a fantastic place to take a camera. At the venerable Ace, on Manchester Road near Hampton Avenue, a field of scrap takes on textural notes that shift from boxy to jagged, mountainous to moguled, brilliantly shiny to wracked with rust.
Bushman says some of her favorite aesthetically pleasing recyclables include “computer boards, bright copper, and yellow brass.”
“Sometimes we find little brass elephants and horses in the brass, too,” she said.
