As hard as it is to believe, summer is right around the corner. The evidence is everywhere. Sunscreen, usually the underdog of the cosmetics department, is once again prominently on display at the local pharmacy. Splashes of neon-hued swimwear command your attention, even in the most unexpected of places—drop by Sam’s Club, not only can you buy a gallon’s worth of mayo, but also swimwear for the whole family.
People, especially women, put a lot of thought into their swimming suits, and for good reason, but what you wear pre-swim and post-swim is of equal or greater importance. You’re actually more visually accessible walking around the pool than you are in it, so I think it’s time for poolside attire to get the attention it deserves. Seriously, you don’t have to be a Pulitzer, or Jackie O, to don a caftan. Here are a few tips for getting it right:
Be a show-off: Don’t cover yourself from head to toe with fabric in an attempt to look skinny—you’ll just look out of place, especially when the temperature soars. Instead, do a realistic, but forgiving analysis of your, ahem, assets. Play up your best features. If you have great arms and shoulders, try a simple cotton sarong, but instead of tying it at the waist, wear it as a strapless dress. If you’re frame is proportionate and plus-sized, a sheer caftan may be just what you need.
Try it on: Try a lot on—have fun with it! Just make sure you’re at a boutique or department store with flattering mirrors and good lighting—it makes all the difference in your attitude. You can also purchase the items you’re interested in and try them on in the comfort of your own home. Just make sure to check the store’s return policy in advance, keep all receipts, and adhere to the rules of common courtesy when returning an item.
Think outside the box: You don’t need to spend a fortune on poolside attire to look chic, simply shop your closet first. The two photos (above, from Roxy and Forever 21) are actually both tops, but make great choices for lounging poolside or for a leisurely walk on the beach.
Be unconventional: a simple white button-down shirt (even your hubby’s) takes on a whole new look when paired with a hot pink bikini top… and that crazy patterned skirt that’s too loud for the office? It’s just the right volume for the pool.
So shirt, caftan, or sarong—no matter what you decide, always wear your smile; it’s the most flattering thing you can put on.
