This year’s regularly held show of figure art from across the U.S. at Fontbonne University is really worth a look. The Figure Now was juried really well by gifted painters Steve Huston and Nathan Lewis.
Derek Wilkinson’s “Taking Out the Trash” is a hilarious riff on the seriousness of the self-portrait. Joseph Lauer’s “Body and Soul” is an enigmatic portrait of a construction worker obscured by the protective grid of the equipment he steers; he becomes his machine. Jason Sacran’s “Into the Light” is a study in chiaroscuro—you can marvel at the sunlight glinting through a man’s arm hairs (as never before).
Have a look-see.
