British group Little Barrie has been garnering buzz overseas for the past several years, and is now poised to make break out in the States as well. We caught up with the band via e-mail while the band was in the studio, working on its newest EP.
How would you describe your sound to someone who's never heard your music before?
Lewis Wharton (Bass/Vocals): This is always a difficult question to answer. It's a mix of different sounds we like from all kinds of genres of music; we're not really fitting into any modern scene, which usually seems to be bands sounding like other bands anyway (at least over here). We like a lot of different sounds, and each album has a different sound, we aren't going out of our way to be experimental...just taking our influences, and making something original with them.
Barrie Cadogan (Vocals/Guitar): Lewis is right, it's the hardest thing to answer. We have nothing in common with any kind of scene that's popular, we just do what feels exciting to us. We love the spirit and emotion of Blues/Rhythm & Blues, the experimentation of early psych and Krautrock and the energy of rock 'n' roll, along with certain studio sounds and production techniques which inspire us too.
Virgil Howe (Drums/Vocals): I think we do sound British. In the vein of fuzzed out Yardbirds meets David Axelrod and Duane Eddy!!
For people trying to beef up on your music before LouFest, are there any tracks that you think are key to listen to?
Lewis: Surf Hell, Tip It Over, these are two ever presents in our live set.
Have you played any summer festivals like LouFest before?
Barrie: Festivals are really different from each other, depending where in the world you're playing. We're really looking forward to our first one in the U.S. It's gonna be our third trip this year. It's not always easy for British bands to tour America, so we're delighted to be coming back again. U.S. audiences have been really cool. I hear Dinosaur Jr are playing too, who I really like.
Virgil: I love festivals! Hope we have time to hang out.
Is there some song that if anybody in the audience yelled for it that you would have to play it for them?
Lewis: "Brand New Cadillac"
Virgil: "Drum Solo!"
