A longtime comics fan, Christina “Steenz” Stewart started creating her own comics around 2012, after joining Ink and Drink Comics, a collective of creatives that releases semiannual anthologies and provides “a taste of what it’s like to publish a comic,” explains Stewart. Today she oversees a webcomic called Archival Quality and has co-founded the collective Studio 741.5 (named after the Dewey decimal call number for comics).
During the past two summers, the onetime Star Clipper staffer has helped organize comics mini-cons for the St. Louis Public Library. She believes that such events, as well as small press publishers in general, expose readers (and writers) to new styles of storytelling by up-and-coming artists.
St. Louis’ small press—which spans comics, zines, prints, poetry, and more—comprises many social groups, including Westminster Press’ Zine Club and the St. Louis Small Press Expo.
