This Sunday at Dressel’s Public House (419 N. Euclid), the St. Louis Poetry Center will host a benefit reading from 4 to 7 p.m. The evening will celebrate the centennial of poet Dylan Thomas with works being read by special guests, as well as a silent auction, featuring artwork and rare and limited edition books.
Jon Dressel—who will be master of ceremonies for the evening, though he is also a poet and will be reading some of Thomas’ works—says that “It seems to me that the power, energy and musicality of his greatest poems strike a particular and enduring chord with Americans.”
David Lloyd, an expert in Anglo-Welsh poetry and the work of Dylan Thomas, will join Dressel in reading from the bard’s works on Sunday, and will be accompanied by many local poets, authors, and actors for the reading.
Although Thomas wrote exclusively in English, he is considered one of the most important Welsh poets of the 20th century. He was lauded during his lifetime for his use of original imagery and rhythmic wording, and has remained popular since his untimely death in 1954, at just 39 years old.
Tickets for the event are $50 and can be purchased by calling 314-973-0616 or online at stlouispoetrycenter.org/tickets.
