ROD MCKUEN LEFT HIS HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO; SULIER'S TAKING HIS TO MINNEAPOLIS
So, as I mentioned yesterday, I volunteer at KDHX once a month, filling in for Ann Haubrich and Jane Ellen Ibur of Literature for the Halibut. Last year, I did an "all-vinyl" show in September because I was in the middle of a no-impact experiment and couldn't waste anything - often I'll burn CDs just to play on the show - so I opted to play poetry on the turntable. It was such an odd but pleasant experience (I don't have a record player, so I never get to hear these tracks, even though I compulsively collect poetry on LP) so I thought I'd do an anniversary edition this Thursday when I'm back on the air. However, it turns out that Joe Sulier', founder of the Get Born poetry reading series, is heading out to Minneapolis, and Thursday will be his very last day in St. Louis. It sounds like Joe may be on board to to chat on the air that night, to read some new stuff and fill everyone in on his move to Minnesota. If you never made it out to a Get Born reading, they were (and hopefully still will be!) held on the first Monday of the month, in various locations, including Duff's, CAMP and the Way Out Club. Joe and his fellow organizers are young - early to mid-20s - though many of the other readers, including Phil Gounis and Brett Underwood, ranged anywhere from 40 to 60. Sulier' always said that Get Born was about youth, not age necessarily, but a sort of devil-may-care embrace of experience and the world, the sort of mindset one needs to really write poetry. Sorry-ass working girl me never had the stamina to stay up till 11 or 12 on a Monday night and missed many of these readings, but always recommended them to folks who don't rise with the rooster on Tuesday mornings. Anyway, you appreciators of neo-Beat, youthful poetry - just a heads up that Sulier' may be on the air this Thursday (I haven't confirmed this with Mr. Sulier' 100 percent). And if I'm not talking to Joe, I'll be spinning some excellent selections from the spoken word section at Record Exchange. And by the by ... I'll be down at Everest Cafe for a wee bit today over the lunch hour with Ann, Jane and Jean Ponzi from Earthworms for the station's Taste for Tunes promo, so swing by if you're so inclined.
