April is Jazz Appreciation Month. Who knew? Lowly English majors like myself tend to think of this as National Poetry Month, but there's room enough in this month for both Monk and Merwin.
So, since it's April, Urban Eats Cafe and the Urban Arts Collective are hosting a jazz-themed Sunday brunch, or rather a New Orleans jazz-themed Sunday brunch, because red beans and rice are on the menu, along with cornbread and bread pudding with meringue and chocolate sauce (Emeril's recipe) and "glamor girl cocktails." Yes, you really cannot have a New Orleans-style brunch, jazz-themed or otherwise, unless there is the potential for a cocktail on the table. (This is firsthand knowledge from a Utah girl who had to learn how to deal with drinking spiked eggnog on Christmas morning.)
In addition to the jazzy menu, pianist Curt "Gaptoof" Landes will play from noon to 2 p.m. and Tony Renner's jazz-inspired Expressionist paintings will be hanging on the walls. Oh, and: no reservations required. One of those lovely "come as you are," situations. Sounds perfect. Now someone just has to figure out how to do this with poetry. --Stefene Russell
