Cleaning your makeup brushes is just as essential as any other kind of hygienic maintenance. But unlike throwing away an old toothbrush or discarding mascara that’s older than two months, it can be easy to forget to regularly clean your makeup brushes (I’m definitely guilty of it). It’s not hard to keep kabuki and the gang clean, and there are several different ways to clean them. Whether you opt for natural household cleaners or products from your favorite cosmetic brand, clean brushes are key to avoiding clogged pours, keeping your makeup looking smooth and fresh, and even avoiding bacteria growth and infection.
BareMinerals Well-Cared For Brush Conditioning Shampoo
I love using this brush cleaner. It keeps every brush from my liner to foundation brush super soft. Just a dime-sized amount and lots of warm water is all that’s needed to clean each brush, which is great considering the ample size of the bottle.
Sephora’s Daily Brush Cleaner is an easy alternative to weekly brush washing. Just spray the cleanser onto your brush right after use, no water necessary! Your brushes are sure to stay clean and disinfected, just be sure to use as often as possible for a super clean brush.
Natural Remedy
All you need is extra-virgin olive oil, liquid castile soap, vinegar, two small bowls, and a washcloth. First, pour half a teaspoon onto your washcloth. Press the brush into the olive oil and swipe the towel several times. Be sure to avoid cleaning the stem area of the brush. It make loosen the bristles. Next, pour a teaspoon of liquid castile soap into a small bowl of warm water. Rub your fingers around the bristles, while still avoiding the stem, squeeze out the water and do as many times as necessary. The final step is optional, but if you want to get a super clean brush, then I definitely recommend using distilled vinegar to clean your brushes before rinsing. Just dip the brush into the vinegar a couple of times and you’re done. Your brush will be silky smooth and clean as a whistle!
