"The Green Haired Club Meeting," by i wish i was the royal trux.
The Green With Indie Crafts Show is this weekend, and I was really amazed to see that they have almost 100 artist/craftspeople participating. I helped organize Schlafly's Art Outside in its second year (2005) and I can tell you, it's really hard to get the word out and round up 80 artists, period. Rounding up that number of green artists would be 10 times harder -- not only does art require a voracious consumption of materials, but lots of those materials are toxic, from oil paint to ceramic glazes. (And that's always been the case; look at poor Goya, after he licked the lead paint off his brushes ....)
Though the focus is on green arts and crafts, the show is co-sponsored by STL Craft Mafia and Webster's Environmental Studies Committee; they've pulled in folks like HomeEco green general store, Local Harvest (St. Louis' own locavore grocery) and a local upcycling exchange and a plethora of other ecologically minded local groups. Not a bad to keep celebrating the Spring Equinox all weekend long, I think. --Stefene Russell
