First things first: Tonight at Hoffman-LaChance Fine Art in Maplewood, "Three Oh Six," a show of St. Louis and Chicago artists. Curated by Mike Behle (St. Louis) and Stacie Johnson (Chicago) it's a foreign exchange of sorts. Johnson explains the concept:
"After meeting two years ago at a residency in Vermont, Michael Behle and I (Stacie Johnson) have had an ongoing discussion about contemporary art while also comparing our scenes in Chicago and St. Louis. The proposed exhibition will extrapolate on this conversation. It will showcase 8 artists living/working in Chicago, chosen by me, and 8 artists living/working in St. Louis, chosen by Michael, and is titled threehundredsix (the number of miles as estimated by mapquest between our residences)."
The Chicago artists are Brian Kapernekas, Carmen Price, Loo Bain, Liz Nielson, Mindy Rose Schwartz, Will Staples, Caleb Lyons and Ben Stone; from St. Louis, Greg Edmondson, Elizabeth Ferry, Jason Hoenig, B.j. Vogt, Jesse Thomas, Nosey Parker (aka Brett Williams and Robert Goetz) and Catherine Magel. That's tonight at Hoffman-LaChance, 3100 Sutton in Maplewood. I imagine everything will kick off about 7pm, though there's not hard and fast time listed on the website.
And on Sunday, Belas Artes Multicultural Center and Gallery kicks off their National Hispanic Heritage Month festivities at 1:30pm with a concert from Mexican Ballet Folklorico at the Science Center. Belas Artes has a whole slate of neat activities scheduled through early October, including a "Mighty Monarch Festival" at the Butterfly House; a Latino art festival; tango lessons; a Dia de los Muertos ball; Bossa Nova night with traditional Brazilian cuisine; a live performance by Inca Sons and traditional Peruvian food; and lots more. Click on the link above, and it'll shoot you to Belas Artes website, where you can get all the details. The press release did give the caveat that not everything's set in stone, and that's the place to check for scheduling updates.
