Yowza. There is a lot going on this weekend, more than usual—and on slow weekend I could just about faint when I hear someone grousing about St. Louis being dull, and there’s nothing to do around here, et cetera. I pound between two and 8 cups of coffee a day and have a hard time mustering the get-up-and-go to go to hit half the gallery openings, music shows and weird little niche festivals that transpire even during the slow weekends.
And I am sure there is a weird little niche festival going on somewhere this weekend (there always is), but it’s also Taste of St. Louis. Which is a rather large festival that really does offer something for everyone, unless your sensibilities are so niche that you’re contemplating hermit-hood. There’s live music, sports stuff and “The Grant’s Farm Kid’s Zone” (AKA a petting zoo) and of course the most crowd-pleasing thing of all—food.
On Saturday, there’s another not-very-tiny-at-all event going on in Grand Center: Dancing in the Streets. I didn’t make it last year (After hearing people talk about Project Bandaloop, the California dance troupe that strapped on giant bungee cords and literally danced on the side of the Continental Building, I was very bummed I'd missed it) but I’m hoping to make it later on Saturday night. Grand Center’s doing a “Grand Gallery Walk” in tandem with that event, with free trolleys to ferry you to and fro. And you know your dogs will be barking, because there are salsa dancing lessons, and around 4 p.m., the Rockettes will be there, teaching people how to do jazz squares and 1-2-3 kicks …—Stefene Russell
