If you’re one to adhere to the old adage “No wearing white after Labor Day”, then you might be apprehensive about sampling this trend while winter is still lingering. But based on the spring 2014 runway collections from Alexander Wang, Rodarte, Victoria Beckham, and Celine, white has been given a fresh, modern makeover. Models were dressed in this airy, luminous palette and parading down the catwalk in flowing silk maxi skirts and crisply tailored suits. Phillip Lim, Thakoon, Derek Lam, and Carolina Herrera also jumped on the proverbial bandwagon, with angelic shades of cream, ivory, and stark white in their shows.
Designer Cesar Galindo is known for his vibrant color palettes and eclectic prints, but strayed from this in his spring 2014 collection at New York Fashion week. Backstage, Galindo told the International Business Times, “We have been so saturated with so many colors that I feel an overall trend in the fashion world will be white.” We couldn’t agree more—this clean and simplistic non-color is a welcome departure from the panoply of vibrant hues that we typically associate with spring and summer.
We’ve all heard that wearing a monochromatic shade, head to toe, is slenderizing and elongating, but I would be remiss not to mention that white can be worn just as effortlessly as black. So as you’re waiting for warm weather to arrive, begin curating a closet rife with this modern, easy-to-wear spring essential.
Rules are meant to be broken. So say goodbye to your dismal, all-black winter ensembles and brighten (or shall I say whiten?) up your look for spring.
