I had the pleasure of interviewing Ed Boccia a few years ago for At Home. I just wish I'd had more space to tell his story. Ed's a born artist, and art historians would describe him as an Abstract Expressionist, but I see him more like a Modernist William Blake. Speaking of which, Ed's also a talented poet; he went back to school in his 60s to study creative writing. Unlike Blake, he keeps his words and pictures separate, but treads just as gracefully in both worlds.
On Friday, October 16, Ed Boccia's opening a retropsective of paintings and drawings spanning almost 60 years, from 1950 to 2009. That's also the night Jon Cournoyer's show opens at Hoffman-LaChance, and the night that Frida Berrigan speaks at the Ethical Society. Oh, my kingdom for a helicopter! If you can't make it down for the reception, though, I urge you to check out Ed's work; Brewington is located in the Central West End, at 4739 McPherson. And if you get lost, or if you want more information, you can call them at 314-361-5373. --Stefene Russell
