David Meister is known for his show-stopping red carpet gowns—Mariah Carey, Diane Lane, and Fergie have all donned his glam creations. While his evening collection is a constant fixture on the Hollywood scene, his chic day and cocktail dresses are not to be missed. A master at fitting and draping, Mr. Meister knows a thing or two about how to dress a woman's body. He let me in on a few the tricks of the trade...
How did you get your start in fashion?
I was always very creative and interested in clothing from early on—as early as three or four years old. I also was very opinionated. I studied at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning where I majored in fashion. After graduation I packed up and moved to New York.
It seems you've mastered the art of draping a woman's body—are there any tricks to looking slimmer?
Most importantly is fit, fit, fit!!!! An inexpensive garment that fits well will look better than an expensive garment that has not been tailored to your body. There are a million tricks—ruching is very feminine and pretty but also can conceal a million figure flaws.
What's your favorite red carpet moment?
There are so many! No one understands clothing and the red carpet like Sharon Stone. Dressing Tina Fey in my sexy mermaid gown for the Emmy's was also pretty special. I just dressed Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver in identical dresses for the premiere of their new release You Again. That was hysterical and they were such a pleasure to work with.
Any tips on what to look for when shopping for a dress?
Always be willing to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new that you normally would not try. Sometimes it's a bust but often you will find something new and exciting.
What can we expect from your fall collection?
Rich beautiful colors, simple sexy shapes and always knit and stretch?so essential for modern dressing.
