Some may find it easy to write off Ferguson as just another suburban bedroom community, but a series of promising developments on Florissant, in the area now known as Citywalk, may have you thinking twice. Here’s a guide to what’s (relatively) new on on the street; for more information, visit fergusoncitywalk.com.
This surprisingly chic wine bar opened in 2010. A selection of over 100 wines is complemented with a tapas-like menu of small plates and snacks. The walls are home to local artwork, and recycled wine bottles are found all over the place. 423 South Florissant, 314-521-9463, corkwinebarstl.com.
When Ray Hill (formerly of Anheuser-Busch) backed out of what would have been Ray Hill’s Brewhouse, owner and serial entrepreneur Joe Lonero wasn’t fazed—and opened Ferguson Brewing Company. Nine beers on tap are brewed in house, and other Missouri brews are available, along with a traditional American food menu. 418 South Florissant, 314-521-2220, fergusonbrewing.com.
With UMSL down the street, and a bike trail planned to begin at Plaza at 501 (below), it only made sense for a bike shop to pop up along South Florissant. Purchase a new bike, or bring yours in for a tune-up. 429 South Florissant, 314-315-4940, fergusonbicycleshop.com.
The Farmers Market isn’t exactly new—it’s been happening on Saturday mornings since 2002—but there are always new farmers, artist events, and vendors to be found there. 20 South Florissant, fergmarket.com
Free Range Cookies caters to those with Celiac’s Disease, a condition that requires a gluten-free diet. The treats range from cranberry oatmeal cookies to a premade gluten-free pizza crust. 425 South Florissant, 314-882-0163, freerangecookies.com
This, well, plaza, is home to the Citywalk concert series. This year’s lineup includes Erin Bode, Northwinds Band, Ross Christopher, Maple Jam Band, and more. 501 South Florissant, fergusoncitywalk.com/events.html.
During the day, this space is actually a real estate office, but at night becomes an art gallery. 427 Gallery is currently hosting an exhibit by the Northern Arts Council; the next exhibit slated for the gallery is a collection of vintage Ferguson memorabilia. 427 South Florissant.
