I recently stumbled upon the classic I Dream of Jeannie sitcom while channel surfing the other week. And while I haven't watched much vintage TV since my elementary school days, I was immediately struck by Barbara Eden's classic yet sultry beauty she exuded as a love-hungry, 2,000-year-old genie. From her shiny blonde hair done up in her signature braided ponytail to her ravishing eye makeup, I wondered why she isn't quite as revered as other high-profile beauties of her era (think Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren). So after watching several episodes (yes, I was hooked) and obsessively studying her makeup, I can confidently share how to get Barbara's covetable cat eye and modified hair 'do for the modern woman.
Makeup:
For Barbara's Jeannie character, her look was all about the liner and lashes. Go with a lighter eyeshadow to let your black liner and mascara pop. Using your liner brush (I prefer liquid, but pencil works too), start at the edge of your eyelid and brush upwards to the corner of your eye. Unlike other cat eyes that tend to extend horizontally, Barbara's cat eye had a more dramatic upward swoop. You don't have to go quite as high as Barbara to achieve a similar look. For the bottom lid, don't let it touch the corner of your eye. Instead, leave a space between the edge of both lids and fill with a light or skin-tone shadow. You can control the thickness and extension of the liner to determine how dramatic of a look you want. And don't forget the lashes. It's okay to pile it on! I always apply mine in a side-to-side upwards motion. It goes on super thick without the clump. Add a little pink lipstick and you're good to go!
