How much bacon can you eat to support local archaeology? Find out on March 21 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Applebee's in Swansea (2624 N. Illinios), where you can stuff yourself with all the pancakes, eggs, sausages, coffee and bacon you can hold, with the quite reasonable $8 admission going to benefit the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society's Archaeology Volunteer Program. CMCS gives average bears the chance to participate in field investigations at Cahokia Mounds in Collinsville, Ill. Digs take place May through July and are physically demanding (plus you're out there in the heat -- ugh) so you've got to be in pretty good physical shape to sign up. You also need to be at least 18 and a member of the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society (memberships are $25+). Trips are overseen by the Central Mississippi Valley Archaeological Research Institute, and the breakfast money helps pay for their time and expertise. Applications to go out on a 2009 field investigation can be downloaded here. --Stefene Russell
