Once again, our Monday news roundup got bumped to Wednesday, this time thanks to the holiday weekend. But: onward! Breaking it down, laundry-list style:
—The Sci-Fi Lounge, “an extraordinary gallery and toy museum for geeks, gamers, gothgirls, and fanboys of all ages,” has moved to Crestwood Plaza. Here’s a video tour, courtesy of Lo-Fi St. Louis.
—Metropolis and Schlafly are sponsoring a “Wacky Wednesday Walk,” tonight on South Grand, with stop-offs at Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant, Mojo’s and Mangia.
—On Saturday, the Dogtown Historical Society throws its first annual Dogtown Street Musicians Festival. Buskers will take over the neighborhood’s central business district at 11 a.m., and play until dusk, when judges give out awards for best performances of the day. Can’t find a webpage per se, but you can follow them at twitter.com/DgtwnMusicFest.
—Speaking of Twitter…we had to take note of Cranky Yellow’s amusing tweet yesterday: “…just had a guy come in to buy things from us for installations at the anthropologie store windows!! Take that consumerism, you still need our tiny shops to fuel your creative fire.”
—First Run Theatre is calling for scripts for its Ninth Annual New Plays Submission Competition, with winners to be considered for next year’s season (and that's on stage, not just staged readings). Deadline is November 30; more info at firstruntheatre.com, or contact them at info@firstruntheatre.com or 314-352-5114.
—And finally, Jonathan Franzen’s new novel, Freedom, continues to stir up the dust. The Kansas City Star ran a thoughtful, temperate op-ed this week that seemed (at least to us) like one of the saner reactions to the whole thing. You can read that here.
