The big news this week, of course, is that they are announcing the winner of the Arch Grounds Competition on Friday...after UrbanSTL already leaked that the winner is Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. There was an interesting Twitter scuffle yesterday after the Post ran the story without giving UrbanSTL any credit for breaking the story. (The Biz Journal did.) It's much more exciting to watch these things as they happen, of course, but you can kinda get a sense of it all by peeking at urbanst's Twitter stream...which also shows that they were not the ones complaining about not getting credit, by the by. Brian Newman, our architecture critic, will be posting his take on MVVA's proposal in the next few days, so keep your eyes out for that.
Though it's a little more low-key, architecture and design-heads should also check out Landmarks Association of St. Louis' latest exhibit, Lines of Beauty Original Renderings by St. Louis Architects. Curated by local collector and Midcentury preservationist Kyrle Boldt, the show is a collection of rare, hand-drawn renderings, including work from Charles Eames, William Bernoudy and Isadore Shank. The show, which opened last week, spans nearly the entire 20th century, from John Ludwig Rees' 1890 rendering of the Tuholske Surgican Institute to more contemporary work. It runs through December 15, and can be seen at the Carolyn Hewes Toft Gallery, AIA, 911 Washington.
Other shows worth checking out in the immediate: Ed Boccia's Multi-Paneled Paintings at Lindenwood University's Boyle Family Gallery, which runs through October 3; David Schild's new show, being content with uncertainty, which opens this Friday at Hunt Gallery at Webster University; Sarah Carmody's latest photography show, Creatorecorder, also at Webster, in the May Gallery; and of course, Garth Weiser's show at White Flag Projects, which we covered last week.
