March is Women's History Month, and yesterday was International Womens' Day. There are lots of events this month celebrating women, but the most immediate is "HerStory Weekend," a fundraiser sponsored by KDHX that helps single parents send their kids to Southwestern Illinois College. Even more info here.
Unless you're in printmaking, there's no reason you would necessarily know this, but: the 2011 SGC (Southeastern Graphics Council) International Conference takes place in St. Louis March 16-18. And there are events scheduled for it all over the city, including Grand Center, Cherokee, and Wash. U. You can get some background, look at some images, and find a full list of events at the conference website.
Outlaw printmaker Tom Huck is planning an alternate (complementary? Depends on how you roll) series of events, Hell Week (March 14-20), which we will address in further detail on Friday. Till then, you can sate your curiosity by clicking here.
And we meant to get this list up sooner: the St. Louis Independent Bookstore Bestseller List. Generated by the newly formed St. Louis Independent Bookstore Alliance, it's a weekly tally of what has been selling well at area indie bookstores. If you are a reader who loves the smell of paper and the serendipity of browsing (and appreciates the wise recommendations of bookstore employees), take note. Here's the list for the week of February 27:
1. Ponyella by Laura Numeroff
2. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff
3. If You Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff
4. The Postmistress by Sarah Blake
5. Attention Please Now by Matthew Pitt (tie)
5. Sex, Sin and Zen by Brad Warner (tie)
7. Sit Down and Shut Up by Brad Warner
8. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (tie)
8. Loving; Living; Party Going by Henry Green (tie)
10. The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman
