In my vintage world, I am responsible for making sure countless pieces of iconic designer wearables make it to a younger generation that understands their historic importance. And little we have is more covetable than the vintage designer handbag, much as the hottest new whatever is important to many women. A handbag doesn't squeeze your midriff after a cupcake lunch with the girls. The handbag always "fits" and is within reach of all women, regardless of size, height, shape, or financial status.
So why would I suggest you do something as unthinkable as not carrying one? Handbags have become more than their former utilitarian selves; they have sadly become indicative of a woman's social ambition, status, and fashion know-how. Miss Thing out in the country with no running water and an outhouse can fool a lot of townfolk with a Gucci bag and some trendy jeans. Not carrying a purse of any kind is a sartorial statement about not having to impress others with your bag. If you think keys in the pocket is sheer heresy, look at the oh-so-chic editors of Paris Vogue. No handbags. Ever. If you think you are more fashionable than Carine Roitfeld because you can't be separated from your Louis Vuitton, you had better think again.
No handbag also forces you to rely on your actual choice of clothing to say what you want to say. And if it isn't what's inside that counts, and sometimes it's not, then make your statement without rather than with. Plus, you won't have to worry how you've scored in the handbag wars when sizing yourself up next to everyone at Niche.
