For the past few weeks, St. Louis native Devon Windsor has been gracing the catwalks of some of the world's top designers. From Tom Ford to Peter Som, the striking 19-year-old model has been showing off collections for the 2014 fall/winter season at New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week. A few months ago, SLM spoke with Windsor about her life as a model and her St. Louis roots. Here's some things you might not know about her, straight from the Q&A in the March issue.
1. Unlike many young models, Windsor didn't start traveling until after high school.
"I signed with Gail Lasater at West Model & Talent Management when I was 14 and did photo shoots and commercial work from there," Windsor says. "It wasn’t until after high school that I started really traveling, and I’m glad I waited and was able to have a normal life in high school."
2. She was insecure about her looks when she was younger.
"I try my best to show on social media that I’m just a normal girl: I like to eat ice cream, go on family vacations," she says. "If anything, we’re the weird and unnatural ones; I was very self-conscious about my height and appearance growing up.
3. Even though she's transitioned to high-fashion modeling, she wants to keep her commercial side.
"One of my major goals was to be in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, and I was really excited be able to do that recently. At this point, I’d like to become a common face that people know," she explains. "I want to really establish myself and continue to do high fashion, but also maintain a balance between that and my commercial side."
4. She loves to cook.
"If I wasn't a model right now, I’d probably be in college, possibly getting a culinary degree," she says. "I’ve always been very interested in cooking—I might even take some cooking classes soon."
5. Black jeans are a staple in her wardrobe.
"My personal style changes based on how I’m feeling," she explains. "I usually try to break that stereotypical, beautiful commercial model look. I would describe my personality as edgy and feminine. I have five pairs of black jeans that I love to wear with something as simple as a tank top."
